Ten Things to Consider When Contracting With a Brokerage General Agency

Ten Things to Consider When Contracting With a Brokerage General Agency
Ethics
Ethics has been in the forefront of LIS’s internal mission statement since 1972. We consistently refer to "doing the right thing" with our staff, company relations, and our agents. We believe that best serving the client, agent, and insurance companies we do business with can be done in a manner that benefits all parties. This allows us to maintain quality relationships with our core carriers, which encourage consistently strong offers on our business.
Longevity
Longevity of an agency is extremely important. Agents should seek an agency that attracts and retains talented and experienced professionals. An agency that has been in business for many years brings stability, experience, and consistency to the market. These more mature agencies have likely demonstrated a successful business model throughout the different market conditions that have existed, and will exist in the future. These agencies are therefore more likely to get the job done for the agent when business is produced. LIS has shown consistency, longevity, and a strong business plan since 1972. LIS enjoys a very low employee turnover rate, allowing our case managers to cement strong relationships with their home office counterparts, enabling us to more efficiently work with them and deliver superior offers and service.
Critical Mass
How big does a BGA need to be in order to have the resources necessary to be the house of choice for an agent? If a BGA is too small, it may be unable to provide the contracts, underwriting, and marketing support necessary for success. On the other hand, size isn’t everything. Some of the largest agencies are often impersonal and hard to deal with. Finding an Agency that balances support services with relationships and higher--paying contracts is critical for agents to access the best deals within the industry. LIS independently is already larger than many BGAs. As a Capitas partner, LIS contributes as part of one of the largest and fastest growing Insurance Marketing Organizations (IMOs) in the country. Capitas produces as much annual life insurance premium as some larger insurance companies with their entire national distribution channels. This enables LIS to maintain preferred relationships with the best insurance carriers in the industry. Our Capitas relationship allows us to enjoy the benefits of a large IMO, while still offering local point of sale support.
A Solid Base of Carriers
It is important for a General Agency to have strong relationships with multiple carriers. Otherwise, the agent is forced to shop their business with multiple BGAs, distracting from the primary job of selling. Life Insurance Services has always had a primary objective to associate with a solid base of core carriers. Ultimately, it is the engine that drives the brokerage business. To enhance our offerings, LIS became a Capitas Partner several years ago. As one of the leading Independent Marketing Organizations in the industry, the Capitas platform enabled LIS to provide a greater selection of core carriers to our producers on a preferred basis.
Illustration Support
Keeping up with numerous product offerings from multiple companies and maintaining current software for those companies is a full time endeavor. Removing that burden can effectively produce added revenue for the agent. LIS recognizes that a agent’s time is better spent selling than shopping the market and running illustrations. We have experienced internal wholesalers whose only job is to provide our agents and AGAs with case design support and illustrations. This allows our agents to confidently offer clients the best designed insurance products from the strongest companies in the industry.
Expertise in Advanced Markets and General Marketing
Producers need to know that they and their clients are being given the best advice possible. Since most independent agents are busy with their day-to-day tasks, it is important that they have a reliable source to help them identify emerging markets and growth opportunities. Providing excellence in advanced markets is a core LIS discipline. LIS Associate GAs are selected not only based on their sales skills, but because of their core expertise in specific markets.
Successful New Business Development
A BGA should quickly and reliably process applications, with years of experience in handling different levels of impaired risk cases, as well as large complex cases, with the ability to accurately report case status back to the agent. We put great emphasis on having an efficient new business department, and utilize a combination of highly qualified individuals and strong technology to handle new business operations. We find efficiency in this arena to be critical in helping you in your business.
Commissions
A commission department that quickly turns and processes commissions is a component that is often overlooked by many agents. A commission schedule that properly rewards agent efforts is always important, although secondary to getting the business booked efficiently and quickly. The BGA needs to generate sufficient compensation to hire and retain talented employees while not gouging the writing agent. Commission-to-override ratios need to be logical and profitable, and it is important for an agent to contract with a general agency that has consistently demonstrated its ability to reach higher bonus levels. The greater the volume produced by an agency, the greater the buying power it can command with the product manufacturers (the carriers). These higher commission levels can then be passed along to help agents be more profitable.
Policy Owner Service
Existing clients represent a large percentage of all new business activities. LIS keeps copies of client files going back for decades, and we maintain a database of all cases issued. We are in a position to eliminate most of the research needed to start the typical policy service request with little effort from the agent or client and are happy to do most of the processing for our clients.
Alignment
It is necessary and prudent for an agent to align with a General Agency that represents similar philosophies, or associates with similar professional organizations. LIS is an agency that successfully aligns itself with emerging opportunities and the values of our top agents. Our association with Capitas, NAILBA, Risk Appraisal Forum, our core carriers, and emerging companies has positioned LIS as a Brokerage General Agency that provides ethical business practices with unparalleled back room support and high levels of compensation. It is this combination of experience and vision that has made LIS a prolific and profitable resource for producers and organizations in the financial services industry.
